Many of the interior details have also been redesigned and upgraded, following the exterior’s new direction. Mercedes-Benz says particular importance was attached to optimizing the interior to make it even more driver-oriented. Its centrepiece is a new three-spoke sports steering wheel and a new instrument cluster. Mechanically, engineers paid special attention to the SLK350 – now rated at 305 hp at 6500 rpm – 33 hp more than its predecessor. It’s mated to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission that can blip the throttle automatically during downshifts. Oh, and despite the higher output and high-calibre performance, the SLK 350 consumes considerably less fuel: combined city/highway rating of 9.2 litres per 100 km on rural roads with steering comfort when parking and assured steering characteristics when travelling at high speed. And like its big brother the SL, the SLK is also equipped with a power folding hardtop so drivers can enjoy the experience year-round.
