The iconic Cooper S is the top-level version of BMW’s completely redesigned Mini. Yes, it is all-new, although you’d never guess by glancing at it. The body has grown in every dimension, but it still remains a diminutive proposition.
Transmissions are six-speeds across the board – manual or automatic. Kart-like handling makes any Mini a blast to drive, though the ride is rough.
Also available is a revived John Cooper Works kit for the Cooper S with manual transmission. The dealer-installed kit boosts outputs of the turbo 1.6-litre from 172 to 189 hp and from 177 to 185 lb-ft (or even 200 lb-ft in short bursts).
If you need rear-seat room and/or cargo space, consider the new Clubman with its extra length and third door.
