The scenic Swiss Alps provide a postcard-perfect backdrop to almost every promotional picture the country produces. But its cities are remarkable places to tour, too – especially considering that a characteristically prompt train system links major cities in Switzerland, and parts of Europe, like a tightly wound matrix. And now some trains are even faster.
Recently, high speed rail connections have made the journey from Paris to Switzerland’s Basel, Zurich and Bern even easier for those attracted to the trappings of major cities. The Alps are beautiful from afar, and no doubt skiing is fun, but for travellers who’d rather hoist a cocktail than a sports bag, the three sisters of Switzerland might actually hold a candle to the City of Lights.
Despite the demands of modern life, Switzerland has not severed ties with tradition. True, St. Bernards toting tiny barrels around their necks don’t wander the streets. But the preservation of ancient architecture, culture and art in Basel, Zurich and Bern offers the opportunity for city lovers to shop, dine and catch the latest trends within impressive, almost overwhelming, historical settings.
