Entering its third year, BMW’s X5 offers an optional third-row seat, although like many in this class, space is restricted to youngsters
or in-laws. The base 3.0-litre inline-six generates 260 hp, while the uplevel 4.8-litre V8 makes a grunty 350 hp. The primary
transmission in both cases is a six-speed automatic. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system splits torque 40/60 front/rear, but can send
all the power to either end according to need. The usual slew of active and passive safety technology is present, while BMW’s Active
Steer technology is optional. BMW has announced the 265 hp/425 lb-ft, 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel-powered X5 xDrive35d will
make its way into showrooms late in ’08. Canadian pricing details have not been released as of yet for the new engine, but expect
it to fall somewhere between the $61,900 wanted for a, xDrive30i and $73,500 for the xDrive48i.
