Lexus got the jump on everyone last year when they introduced the world’s first hybrid-powered executive sedan, the LS 600h L. For so many reasons, this car makes so much sense. Hybrid technology is both fuel-efficient (making it perfect for larger vehicles) and expensive (so it’s better suited to high-end models). The long-wheelbase Lexus shares many features with the “more pedestrian” LS 460 L, but there are notable exceptions: a continuously variable transmission, all-wheel drive and, of course, a hybrid engine. In this case, the power comes from a 5.0-litre V8 gas engine linked to a 650V electric motor, which generates 438 HP and a hefty 605 lb-ft of torque. The fourth-generation LS sedan is a significant accomplishment for Lexus in terms of sheer luxury and technological advancement. The Lexus features a pre-collision system that utilizes millimetre-wavelength radar, cameras and infrared night vision to help detect obstacles in the road – and ensure the driver is doing his best to avoid them.
