“Delicious fresh blueberries are a great summertime treat,” says Morris Gervais of Barrie Hill Farms. “But these little blue gems have much more to offer than good looks
and good taste.”
Beside being a good source of Vitamin C and fibre, blueberries are low in fat, sodium and are completely cholesterol free. But here’s the real kicker: studies by the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Illinois have indicated the health benefits from eating blueberries may be as far reaching as preventing cancer and retarding the effects of aging -- particularly the loss of memory and motor skills.
Although Barrie Hill Farms has been in the fruit and vegetable business for decades, back in the 1960s they used to grow tobacco.
“Mom and Dad joke about having gone from causing cancer with tobacco to curing it blueberries,” says Gervais, referring to his parents (Adrien and Evelyn Gervais) who have retired, but still work part-time around the local farm.
Blueberries are also a versatile fruit. “They’re delicious in many recipes, or just on their own,”
says Gervais.
Barrie Hill Farms will be hosting its 6th annual Blueberry Pancake Festival on July 26th & 27th at the farm, in support of the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at RVH.
